Introduction to GPS Navigation (Open course)
April 21 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
£60This one-day GPS Navigation course for hikers can be booked on its own or combined with the Introduction to Map-Reading & Navigation course the preceding day. We recommend doing both together, as they support and complement one another.
The GPS Navigation course will cover the essential parts of:-
- Understanding the range of devices available (smart-phones, watches, GPS map units).
- Understanding and choosing suitable mapping.
- Understanding different navigational modes and their pros & cons – and potential dangers.
- Planning a route on a GPS device.
- Following a route on a GPS device.
- Using other navigational features on a GPS device.
This day is a perfect GPS Navigation course for beginner hikers who are not familiar with how to get the best from their GPS device. Although mobile phones and GPS units are popular and can be effective, Mountain Rescue consistently advice that mountain walkers/hikers should be familiar with navigation using a map and compass as a fallback. For that reason, and to improve your understanding of maps, we recommend attending the preceding day’s course too – although this is not mandatory.
The GPS Navigation course for walkers/hikers costs £60 per person for the day, based on a minimum of 4 people attending.
