Mountain Summit Hikes with GPS Navigation (Open course)
April 27 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
£60This is a day combining two different activities for mountain walkers/hikers. It is partly a guided walk/hike to one of the well-known (or perhaps one of the lesser-known) Lake District mountain summits. But it is also partly a GPS navigation course to help you get the best out of your preferred GPS device (smartphone, watch or GPS map unit).
In this way, you will summit a significant mountain safely and also learn how to use your GPS device to best effect on your future walks/hikes.
During the mountain walk/hike we will look at and practice:-
- The pros and cons of different physical GPS devices.
- The pros and cons of different types of mapping on this devices.
- The pros and cons of using uploaded .gpx files.
- How to plan your own route for a GPS device.
- Different navigational modes and when to use them – and when not to use them.
- Following a planned route on a GPS device.
- Making use of other relevant features on GPS devices.
By the end of the day you should feel more aware of the strengths and limitations of GPS systems and feel confident that you can undertake your own mountain walks/hikes more safely.
The cost of the course is £60 per person based on a minimum of 4 people attending. The course runs for two consecutive days, so you can book just one of the days. Or, if you really want to get more practice and consolidate your learning, you can book both consecutive days. (The walk/hike will be different on each day).
