Introduction

A learn to lead scrambling course in Eryri (Snowdonia) is one of our most enjoyable and challenging courses. It’s certainly one of my own personal favourites to run, partly because I enjoy scrambling so much myself; and partly because of the world of possibilities that it opens up for clients.

On a Grade 3 scramble many people would prefer to have some protection. This would include a helmet and a harness and the use of a rope and climbing equipment – along with the knowledge of how to use them.

That is the purpose of our learn to lead scrambling courses in Eryri (Snowdonia). We will teach you a variety alpine mountaineering techniques which can be use to protect Grade 3 scrambles. You will need to use these techniques without slowing down your progress too much.

With the exception of a couple of parts of Scotland, the scrambling available in Eryri (Snowdonia) is generally the best in the whole of the UK. That in turn, has its roots in the geological history of Eryri. Ancient volcanic activity, millions of years of erosion and finally glaciation have created sharp rocky peaks and ridges. This really is a paradise for scramblers.

On a learn to lead scrambling course you will be coached in pulling together a variety of skills to enable you to go on, and protect, Grade 3 scrambles in the UK. These same skills are the foundation of alpine mountaineering techniques for those who are aspiring alpinists.

The skillset for successful scrambling and mountaineering is large and wide-ranging. It includes navigation (especially in descent); route finding on the scramble itself; climbing technique; and of course rope work. The rope work and use of equipment includes very many of the skills used by rock climbers to protect rock climbs. We cover choosing anchors, using the right equipment and knots to attach to anchors, and different methods of using the rope to belay or safeguard the second scrambler.

Equally important, a learn to lead scrambling course will help develop your judgement and decision making in a variety of different ways. This starts with choosing suitable scrambling routes based on your own and your group’s experience in the prevailing weather conditions. It continues on to deciding what technical skills to use at each step of the scramble. There’s certainly a lot to cover.
