Winter walking in the Mamores

This shot was taken during a lovely day winter walking in the Mamores range, close to Ben Nevis. It was early in January 2020, and two of us had gone out for an early season ‘leg-stretch’ prior to the proper working season starting. Our target was the north ridge of Stob Ban, a classic ridge scramble given Grade 1 in winter. It’s the ridge in the middle distance, disappearing off to the right where the summit is. That day it was in decent winter condition and gave us an enjoyable route to the top of Stob Ban.

Keen for a bit more walking to enjoy the Mamores in winter condition, we headed around to Mullach nan Coirean before descending its west ridge towards Coire Riabhach. The view from here, as the photo shows, is stunning. We could clearly see Sgurr a Mhaim and with it, the Devil’s Ridge in profile. The dim light of the late January afternoon gave it an eerie atmosphere. All of the winter walking in the Mamores comes highly recommended.
