Pockets in winter
This week I was out in the Cairngorms with several different groups, but almost all of them novices. There was very little snow, but it was cold and very, very windy. In these conditions looking after yourself can be more tricky than you may think. So, for the novice winter walker, here’s what I would aim to have most readily to hand, to minimize ‘faff’ time:
- Jacket pockets and inner pockets:
- Map and compass – the map being a massively cut down affair for just the relevant area.
- Hat and thin gloves – thin gloves potentially for the walk-in and out when it might not be cold and for greater dexterity while doing things (eg taking photos etc).
- Food – expect not to stop much and eat on the move or in very short breaks.
- Phone (with GPS) – in waterproof case
- Rucksack lid:
- 1stspare gloves – the main gloves for the day being on my hands.
- Ski-goggles – easily accessible for when the wind picks up.
You can learn more about all of this on one of our winter skills courses in Scotland or the Lake District.
