BAA app – Tip #23

The BAA app

Last winter I wrote a quick note about the ‘Be Avalanche Aware’ (BAA) planning method, recommending this to everyone. Well, like everything in this world now, it’s not real until it has an App.

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service, in conjunction with others, has just released an App (which incorporates all the BAA information and resources, along with a couple of funky tools.

First, when you have downloaded the relevant map sheets (Cairngorms, Ben Nevis etc) then you can display the ‘avalanche rose’ (also flippantly known as the ‘pizza of death’) superimposed on your GPS location on the map. Secondly, there is a neat camera-based clinometer for measuring slope angle.

It’s well worth getting to enhance your learning and for practical use in the mountains too.
